1987 Chevrolet C4 Corvette Coupe
Cosmetically, the '87 Corvette was virtually unchanged from the '86 model, except for one, immediately identifiable feature - the wheels. The wheel centre caps and radial slots on the '84
and '85 models were painted black. In 1986 only the slots were black. For the 1987 model year the black paint was gone completely and replaced by a grey colouring.
To reduce engine friction to improve engine performance and fuel economy, rollers were added to the hydraulic lifters, taking the '87 L98 350ci small-block's horsepower rating to 240bhp, an increase of 10bhp over the '86 engine. A thicker core radiator and a second electric cooling fan were added to help maintain cooler engine temperatures. Additionally, the '87 model received a power-steering cooler. Along with the engine upgrades, two suspension options were available, but only for manual transmission equipped coupes. The Z52 "sports handling package" option was a softer version of the Z51 package, with wider, 9.5 inch wheels, a solid and thicker front anti-roll bar, gas-charged shocks, quick-ratio steering, and chassis stiffeners originally developed for the convertible. Base chassis spring rates and bushings were retained. The Z51 package featured much of the same hardware as the Z52 option, but included stiffer springs and front lower-control-arm bushings, and a solid; rather than link type; rear stabilizer. New for 1987 was an aftermarket option available to customers when ordering their Corvettes from the factory. Although not a "factory option", customers could order a Callaway Twin-Turbo engine package through participating dealers. The B2K twin turbo engine was rated at 345bhp. When installed, the Corvette could reach 177 MPH with .60 overdrive gearing. The B2K package wasn't cheap. It was an additional $19 995 over the Corvette base price. Callaway produced sixty-five convertibles. In total 20 007 Corvette coupes were built during the 1987 model year.
