1988 Chevrolet C4 Corvette Coupe
Cosmetically, the base '88 Corvette was virtually unchanged from the '87 but there were significant engine and chassis upgrades. For 1988, the L98 small-block engine received a five horsepower increase compliments of freer-breathing cylinder heads and re-profiled camshaft. A new muffler system, standard on coupes with the 3.07:1 rear axle ratio provided an additional five horsepower due to a less restrictive flow. The new muffler system was deemed too loud for the convertible and 2.59:1 rear axle ratio coupes and was not installed.

An aftermarket turbocharger package was available to customers when ordering their Corvettes from the factory. Although not a "factory option", customers could order a B2K Callaway Twin-Turbo engine package through participating dealers. A B2K twin turbo engine was rated at 382bhp. When installed, the Corvette could reach 191 MPH. The B2K package wasn't cheap. It was an additional $25,895.00 over the Corvette base price. Callaway carried out one hundred and twenty-five conversions.

Standard brake rotors were thickened and suspension changes were made to improve control during heavy braking. A wider wheel/tyre package (18 x 8.5 inch wheels with P255 / 50VR16 tyres), reworked front steering geometry, and a rear suspension revision that provided slightly more rebound travel and reduced camber gave the '88 model better straight-line and braking stability

The Z51 and Z52 options were upgraded to include 17 x 9.5 inch wheels with P275/40ZR-17 tyres. The Z51 option, available only on coupes featured much of the same hardware as the Z52 option but included a power steering cooler, higher spring rates and larger front brake rotors and callipers than 1987.

Corvette turned thirty years old in 1983 but due to engineering decisions made to support increasingly high emissions standards, Chevrolet had opted not to build an '83 Corvette and the thirtieth anniversary had passed virtually unnoticed. The 1988 Chevrolet Corvette represented the thirty-fifth anniversary for Corvette and for its 35th anniversary; Chevrolet announced a limited production run of 2,000 Special Anniversary Edition Z01 Corvette coupes.

The Z01 featured a white lower body incorporating colour-matched door handles, mirrors, body side mouldings, and 17-inch wheels; set off by a black roof hoop and transparent black acrylic roof panel. Special edition commemorative badges were inserted above the body side gills and embroidered into the all-white leather-upholstered interior; and a commemorative anniversary plaque was mounted on the console.

In total 30 632 Corvettes were built during the 1988 model year - 20 007 coupes and 10 625 convertibles.
